This felt like a bleak, uninspired effort to place viewers within a unit tasked with destroying a bridge in Italy as World War II came to an end. Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, and John Ireland deliver believable, hard-edged portrayals of their squad confronting hardship—though the film suffers from extended conversations that, despite being well-crafted, can slow down the narrative by focusing too much on individual characters. I suspect it’s simply too realistic for anyone outside of military experience to truly appreciate, because while skillfully made, it's devoid of humor or emotional resonance and powerfully illustrates the exhaustion felt by everyone involved. The film is somewhat redeemed by its point-of-view direction; at times, we only witness what the soldiers see and hear, which does create a striking impact during the short but intense action sequences.
