The beginning evokes something akin to Arthurian legend, showing astronomers assembled with telescopes and distinctive headwear. The reason for their gathering? They’re debating a potential lunar voyage. Predictably, the discussion becomes animated, but we then observe the recognizable form of a spacecraft being built – again amid disagreements, although the characters have now discarded their unusual clothing. A formal occasion marks the loading of their vessel into a massive cannon, propelling them into space. It's an enjoyable experience, particularly once they’re airborne and the crew is exploring the moon as if it were a pleasant park on a weekend afternoon. The scenery is simple, naturally, but considering it was filmed in 1902, it remains impressive while the team prepares for a peaceful night under what feels like divine observation. A sudden snowfall drives them below the surface where they find themselves in an environment reminiscent of Jules Verne’s works, complete with giant mushrooms and a character who resembles "Ben Gunn," before they uncover evidence of life on the moon – life that proves to be rather hostile, prompting a quick departure. It's not science by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s genuinely amusing, full of action, stunts, and even some special effects.
