_Le Voyage dans la Lune_, also known as _A Trip to the Moon_, is director Georges Méliès' best-known work, coming from a body of over 500 films he created. He plays Professor Barbenfouillis, who joins other astronomers in traveling to the moon’s surface aboard a spacecraft shaped like a bullet and launched by a giant cannon. Upon arrival, the explorers wander around the lunar landscape, sleep beneath the stars, and after encountering a snowstorm, they seek shelter inside a cave where they find Selenites—moon creatures named for the Greek goddess Selene. Following an attack, the astronauts retreat to their spacecraft and plummet back down to Earth, where they are greeted as returning heroes. Several different versions of this film exist, some in black & white and others with hand-coloring. The 2010 "restored" edition has been colorized and includes a soundtrack composed by the French musical group Air (featuring Nicolas Godin, Jean-Benoît Dunckel). This particular version is like a bizarre, dreamlike experience—it even contains a previously missing parade sequence at the film’s conclusion. The black & white versions, accompanied by traditional orchestral scores and frequently narration, are more straightforward to view. I'm giving this movie 3.5 stars primarily because it represents my first exposure to both science fiction cinema and animated films.
