I've always had an intense dislike of dentists, and it occurs to me that showing this film on BBC2 back in the nineteen seventies might actually be responsible! There are moments where Norman Wisdom genuinely manages to build a feeling of danger that surpasses what you typically see in horror films! Considering he’s working in a butcher’s shop is another factor, but anyway… “Pitkin” works for “Mr. Grimsdale” (Edward Chapman), and it's an accident at the shop that lands them both in the hospital overseen by the very particular "Sir Hector" (Jerry Desmonde) and the much friendlier nurse “Haskell” (Jeanette Sterke). As you might expect, wherever he goes, things fall apart, and he’s repeatedly forced to leave, even banned from returning, but he's determined to help out “Lindy” (Lucy Appleby), who hasn’t spoken since her parents died in a plane crash! The plot is entirely foreseeable, naturally, but Norman Wisdom consistently made the slapstick comedy that was his specialty seem completely simple and genuine. He embodies awkwardness with ease as he slides around the hospital floor, desperately hangs onto the roof of an ambulance moving quickly, and even participates in a marching band playing music in an unfamiliar key - all while Chapman is there to provide just enough opposition to keep things moving at a good pace for ninety minutes. It’s also a rather pleasant glimpse into life in London during the early sixties, with the clothes, the cars, and a generally optimistic outlook, and I did find it enjoyable overall.
