Robert Asher’s A Stitch in Time is the product of a writing team including Jack Davies, Norman Wisdom, Henry Blyth and Eddie Leslie; it features Norman Wisdom alongside Edward Chapman, Jeanette Sterke and Jerry Desmonde, with a score by Philip Green and photography by Jack Asher. While perhaps not representative of his best work, A Stitch in Time offers insight into the reasons for Norman Wisdom's widespread appeal. His brand of physical comedy and silly antics isn’t universally enjoyed, but his films consistently provided a positive experience. Though some might describe the emotional core as overly sentimental, others recognize it as an opportunity to temporarily leave behind worries and find simple enjoyment. The film portrays Wisdom as Norman Pitkin, Mr. Grimsdale's (Chapman) young assistant at the local butcher shop. After Grimsdale is taken to the hospital, Pitkin tries his best to assist, which predictably leads to a series of mishaps. This premise enables Wisdom to participate in several energetic scenes involving motorized beds, dental procedures, transporting patients on stretchers, riding on an ambulance, disrupting a marching band, and even cross-dressing. A softer storyline concerns an orphaned girl who has withdrawn after the death of her parents in a plane accident; Norman attempts to bring joy back into her life, illustrating the power of uncomplicated generosity. That’s essentially it—roughly ninety minutes of entertainment. It's simple, lighthearted diversion for anyone needing a break from everyday troubles. 7.5/10
