This is a solid movie about the rock star life, but it would be improved with stronger musical numbers. The story follows a famous musician struggling with excess (played by Kris Kristofferson) who crosses paths with an up-and-coming singer (Barbra Streisand), and he becomes her key to achieving fame. Gary Busey appears as the first performer’s manager. "A Star is Born" from 1976 combines drama, romance, and music, highlighting the rock star lifestyle of the seventies—a distinction from the earlier versions released in 1937 and 1954. It shares similarities with “The Rose” (1979), though I find this film more appealing. "Oh, God! You Devil" (1984) is another worthwhile comparison, regardless of its supernatural themes; my preference leans slightly toward that one. Kristofferson does a good job portraying the rock star, reminiscent of someone like Lindsey Buckingham during the seventies. He’s not an exceptional vocalist, but then again, Bob Dylan wasn't either (and thankfully he’s still around). Barbra Streisand is in excellent form, particularly when wearing her white Superman-like outfit in the desert scenes. She sings beautifully, however, the songs featured in the film don't really resonate with me. Cher had memorable songs during the seventies, as did Fleetwood Mac. What this movie truly needs are better songs, especially considering how much screen time is dedicated to Barbra’s performances. Still, the existing songs get the job done. The most enjoyable part of the film, in my opinion, is the energetic opening performance. The plot then slows down with the romantic storyline, but I did enjoy the surprising scenes set in the desert. The ending is… well, I won't spoil it. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 19 minutes and was filmed in Arizona and at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, California. GRADE: B-/B
