Janet Gaynor delivers a strong performance as Esther Blodgett, a character whose name evokes something out of Dickens—a hopeful actress who travels to Hollywood and encounters Norman Maine (Fredric March), a troubled performer, while working at a party. His career is fading, but he recognizes her potential, and she quickly rises to prominence. The absence of musical numbers, in my opinion, lends a more realistic feel to the narrative. I was surprised by how much the colorization detracted from it; it would have been far more effective presented in black and white. Despite that, the writing is clever, the story moves along well, and it’s generally pleasing to watch.
