The film’s initial moments will immediately remind viewers of “Ball of Fire.” Imagine Gary Cooper in Danny Kaye’s place, Barbara Stanwyck as Virginia Mayo, and then include remarkable musical performances by artists like Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Sonny Burke, among others; the result is a lighthearted narrative about an academic—a music professor this time—who finds himself drawn to a gangster's girlfriend. "Honey" (Mayo) seeks shelter from the FBI with a group of somewhat eccentric professors who are working on an elaborate dictionary of musical terms, and soon “Prof. Frisbee” (Kaye) becomes completely captivated by her. The criminal aspects of the storyline feel a bit forced; her boyfriend "Crow" (Steve Cochran) allows this unusual situation to continue so that he can arrange for them to marry—though there's a chance she might develop feelings for poor “Frisbee” in the meantime. Neither of the main actors delivers a particularly strong performance; Kaye seems somewhat detached from his character, and Mayo has always appeared rather stiff, but they do manage to create some chemistry between them, and Esther Dale’s portrayal of their rather strict housekeeper "Miss Bragg" adds to the enjoyment. Ultimately, it serves as an opportunity for some catchy tunes, a quietly developing romance, and some mildly silly physical comedy. It's enjoyable to watch and listen to, even if I still favored the earlier film; it distinguishes itself enough from that original to be worthwhile in its own right.
