This movie really highlights how money can bring out the worst in people. "Hank" (played by Bill Paxton), his brother "Jacob" (Billy Bob Thornton) and their friend "Lou" (Brent Briscoe) are hunting in the snow when they stumble upon a crashed airplane. The pilot is still in the cockpit, but their attention quickly turns to a sports bag containing over $4m! The question becomes: what should they do with it? Turn it in? Try to hide it? Keep it for themselves? The narrative unfolds against a bleak portrayal of the American dream, where opportunities seem scarce for these men. "Hank" is about to become a father and "Jacob" wants to get back a family farm that was lost years ago. The decision is made! At first, they're organized and careful – no extravagant spending, responsible behavior, staying out of sight – but gradually their resolve begins to weaken. Things escalate when the pregnant "Sarah" (Bridget Fonda) seems even more eager to spend the money than the men who found it. Tensions rise, trust erodes, and newspaper articles reveal details about where the money likely came from. When the FBI shows up, things quickly go downhill. Billy Bob Thornton is a standout, delivering a subtle performance as perhaps the most morally grounded of the group, but all three actors work well together, with Fonda’s character fueling the conflict. While the plot may stretch believability a bit towards the conclusion, it's a compelling look at what people are willing to do for a better life. The setting—a cold, dark landscape combined with a naive small-town atmosphere (particularly among the police) – works well as a quiet community where nothing much happens transforms into something resembling a thriller. The script is tight, avoiding unnecessary dialogue and focusing on how poor decisions lead to even worse consequences, making it worth two hours of your time.
