Two brothers experience their formative years in Montana during the 1920s. Following World War One, the story follows these two young men coming of age in the Missoula region; one is cautious and responsible (Craig Sheffer), while the other acts impulsively (Brad Pitt). Tom Skerritt portrays their father, a thoughtful Presbyterian minister, and Emily Lloyd appears as a possible romantic connection for the more level-headed son. "A River Runs Through It" (1992) draws from a memoir by Norman Maclean and shares some similarities with “Legends of the Fall” (1994), though it’s noticeably less sensational—in a good way. This marked Robert Redford's third time directing, and it was quite successful. The film does a solid job recreating the atmosphere of the 1920s and early 1930s, complete with Model T cars and clandestine bars. Besides Lloyd, Susan Traylor is present as a woman who displays questionable behavior, while Nicole Burdette plays an Indigenous girl that Pitt’s character introduces to one of those hidden establishments. The film's message has depth and isn't entirely straightforward, but it becomes apparent with some consideration. Nevertheless, it's a wonderful drama that transports you to rural America during the 1920s. If you enjoyed “Legends of the Fall” and “The Horse Whisperer” (1998), then this is worth seeing. The movie’s length is 2 hours and 3 minutes, and it was filmed in western Montana (Livingston, Granite Falls & Bozeman), with a single scene taking place in Wyoming. The scenery itself is certainly one of the film's best aspects. GRADE: A-/B+
