MovieGuys on A Quiet Place: Day One

4/10 · Jun 30, 2024

It’s nothing remarkable. My initial feeling about A Quiet Place Day One hasn't changed. The most significant problem seems to be the characters; they come across as bland, detached, and even cynical. The main character frequently states, "Everything is shit...." Maybe this is meant to represent a New York attitude—the constant competition of city life? Regardless, it doesn’t really connect. What made the earlier films so popular was seeing a family that genuinely connected with one another; you could understand their struggles and feel for them when they were threatened by an alien enemy. The horror and action sequences are passable, but again, because the tone is off, the movie feels like it’s just going through the motions. It's true that this kind of story has been told before—so what does this film bring to the table? As far as I can tell, not much. Ultimately, it had potential, but the foundation simply doesn't work for me. It comes across as “just another” horror action movie with a few jump scares to keep you engaged and little else. If you’re going to expand on a successful series, it’s essential to carefully consider what made those earlier films so effective and add something original that also builds upon those core elements in a significant way.
