Brent Marchant on A Quiet Place: Day One

8/10 · Jun 29, 2024

Thoughtful horror movies are a rare find, and this movie proves that suspenseful stories can be crafted without relying on excessive violence or constant character deaths. Films like those made by Jordan Peele and Alex Garland demonstrate how to do it well, as does this impressive series of three films. This latest installment surpasses the others in quality. “Day One” builds upon elements introduced earlier in the franchise but moves the narrative forward with a fresh perspective, achieved through a prequel that explores the origins of this captivating story. What distinguishes this film is its ability to present another chapter while offering a completely different viewpoint, introducing new characters, a new setting, and a more complex focus. Instead of taking place in small-town America, as the previous films did, the action unfolds in New York City, depicting what happens when the familiar aliens that hunt using sound invade – and how people must learn to remain silent to avoid detection. The story centers on a poet facing a terminal illness (Lupita Nyong’o) who has accepted her fate but now desperately wants to live, especially by assisting a frightened Englishman living in New York City (Joseph Quinn) and protecting her cherished cat. These events give her renewed purpose when she might have otherwise lost all hope. The film also explores the challenges of adapting to an unexpected “new normal” under uncertain conditions, as well as the importance of unity during difficult times. There’s more to it than that, including underlying themes and symbolic imagery that elevate it beyond a typical horror movie. While the story occasionally loses its way, it ultimately offers viewers a considered narrative, enhanced by skillful cinematography, an excellent musical score, and a truly outstanding performance from Nyong’o. Even if you haven't seen the previous films or aren’t typically drawn to this genre, writer-director Michael Sarnoski’s second film is worth seeing. It's an intelligent film that goes above what one would usually anticipate from a horror movie – and it will leave you with more than just some thrills after you leave the theater.
