Sam, portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o, resides in a care facility and joins a group on an outing to the city. She only consents to the trip if pizza is involved, though that prospect disappears when their chaperone, Reuben, played by Alex Wolff, attempts to return them home following a city-wide emergency announcement. Objects begin plummeting from the sky—and these objects are predatory. Amidst the unfolding chaos, Sam and her feline companion discover sanctuary within the theater they were visiting; however, even minor noises draw unwanted attention, leading her to consider that obtaining a pepperoni pizza from Patsy’s in Harlem might be their best chance for survival. While moving with caution, she runs into Eric, played by Joseph Quinn, who has traveled from the UK to study law in America and finds himself in an unexpected predicament. Initially hesitant, Sam agrees to accompany him, and a connection slowly forms as the world around them progressively deteriorates. Fortunately, the creatures are unable to swim—suggesting that reaching water might offer a solution. There isn't much conversation throughout the film, so the growing feeling of (restricted) threat is constructed by two performers who are serviceable but lack sufficient material to truly elevate the experience. As always, I’m struck by how far people will go to protect their animal companions; it's strange that they would put themselves in such peril for a cat! It’s generally hard to create compelling narratives from prequels, and Michael Sarnoski doesn't fully flesh out the characters or plot beyond this ninety-minute standalone film that has little connection to the earlier installments. It is acceptable enough, but not particularly memorable. A shame.
