It’s understandable why some might have issues with this, given its nature as a biographical film. I went in expecting something and ended up finding it enjoyable. Biopics inherently come with the understanding that filmmakers can't perfectly replicate someone's life; they are interpretations, not absolute records. Achieving complete accuracy is an impossible task, and this one got reasonably close, like many others do. It’s simply unrealistic to condense a person’s entire existence into a two-hour movie. The director and the cast did commendable work. The film initially presents itself with elaborate costumes, which then diminishes as the narrative becomes more serious. Following her schooling, the younger Emily Dickinson begins writing poetry and achieves some success. However, she doesn't conform to the religious expectations of her family or community. She encounters another young woman who shares similar traits. As time passes, those around her gradually disappear, leaving her isolated. The remainder of her life unfolds in the film’s latter portion. While both portrayals of Emily were well-executed, this ultimately proved to be a flaw within the movie itself. It would have been better to choose just one actress and use makeup effects instead. I appreciated both the first and second halves, but they felt like two distinct films with different performers. The film emphasizes the challenges faced by women during the 19th century, largely confined to Emily’s home. As a true story, it's a worthwhile watch, though not everyone will appreciate it because it doesn’t portray an idealized version of Emily Dickinson’s life. I was hoping for more enthusiastic reception from modern audiences for this film. 7/10
