The wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip is bringing joy to Britain after the war, yet everyday life continues with rationing – people are still limited to just one slice of bacon a week. Residents of a small Yorkshire town have devised a clever solution. Hidden away in the woods, they’re raising a pig, supplementing its diet with some questionable ingredients in preparation for the wedding feast. However, local chiropodist Chilvers (Michael Palin) learns about this and decides that, given how much the town's prominent figures dislike him, he will take possession of the pig for his wife (Maggie Smith) and her mother (Liz Smith). As is typical with a collaboration between Smith and Palin, one character is a strong, practical presence while the other seems rather mild-mannered; it’s hard to imagine the latter knowing what to do if a live pig were running loose – even if they're feeling quite hungry. Writer Alan Bennett experienced this national occasion firsthand, so we can expect some youthful observations and humor as the story unfolds, delivered with his characteristic Northern wit. Richard Griffiths and Denholm Elliott both contribute memorable performances as the somewhat silly plot amusingly amplifies the snobbery of a community where people may not have much in the way of material possessions, but status remains paramount, and two turkeys simply wouldn't be enough to feed everyone.
