'A Minecraft Movie' is surprisingly enjoyable, honestly. I’m really surprised by how much I liked it. The full 101 minutes are pretty ridiculous and goofy, but they embrace that quality completely, which made it easy to overlook. It kept me entertained, what more can I say? I did play Minecraft when I was younger, though casually; I definitely spent a lot of time watching YouTubers play it (shout out to Mindcrack, CaptainSparklez, and ChimneySwift11 lmao). I tended to prefer creative worlds with flat terrain, and I happily wasted a ton of time building very detailed cities... good memories. Even though I wasn’t deeply invested in the game's mechanics, I still recognized many references which was fun. The world presented here feels lively and engaging; they took some liberties with it, but it worked out well. Based on what I saw before it came out, I didn't like the style, but actually the animation is really good. The humor is also quite strong—I was laughing throughout, which wasn’t something I expected. A lot of the jokes are geared toward adults, and I thought it would be more directly aimed at kids; not that there's anything outrageous in it, but it isn't overly simplified, which is a nice thing. It all has a good energy to it. Jack Black is funny, he really throws himself into the role of Steve, and for me, it ended up being almost perfect; I don’t think anyone else could have done it better. I wasn’t convinced when I first heard about his casting, so I'm glad I was wrong. Jason Momoa is similar—especially after seeing trailers. Momoa does a great job in this movie, and the whole cast really shines. Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks are all welcome additions. Rachel House delivers excellent voice work, while Jennifer Coolidge (and Hiram Garcia) have smaller but solid roles too. The cast exceeded my (not very thought-out) expectations. That last sentence pretty much sums up how I feel about this 2025 release overall. I shouldn't have liked it as much as I did, but that’s the case! If you had told me a few hours ago that I would be rating it like this, I would have thought you were crazy. Considering the general reaction people are having, maybe I should keep my thoughts to myself. I do occasionally enjoy a movie that others consider bad, so just leave me alone. A lot of other people agree with me though… so, a great video game adaptation?!
