It's hard to dislike a fluffy white llama, and that might be the most enjoyable aspect of this unoriginal computer-animated movie. The story involves four tech enthusiasts who are pulled into a magical realm governed by the villainous “Malgosha.” She intends to utilize a radiant cube to flee her dreary domain and conquer our world, but she hasn't accounted for the determination of former gaming star “Garrett” (Jason Momoa) and the nerdy “Henry” (Sebastian Hansen). They reconnect with the previously imprisoned “Steve” (Jack Black) to rescue both the realm and Earth. Familiarity with the video game isn’t essential to enjoy its straightforward plot, although I'm not certain it would appeal to anyone older than five years old. The visuals evoke the 1980s, drawing comparisons to films like "Back to the Future" (1985) and “Dungeons & Dragons,” accompanied by a solid musical score that allows Black to showcase his talents and demonstrate how entertainment can be achieved even within what was likely a challenging experience for him. Momoa doesn’t hesitate to poke fun at himself, while Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Henry appear eager to embrace this rare chance to participate in a large-scale film production without extensive dialogue memorization, direction, or makeup sessions. As is typical with these poorly written fantasy stories, the ending feels inevitable; however, given the genuine excitement displayed on screen for something that was significant during many people's childhoods, it’s hard to be overly negative about such an openly sentimental project. It isn't particularly humorous, and laughs are scarce, so it’s best to have modest expectations and allow the nostalgia of your youth (if you’re old enough) to envelop you before leaving the theater, promptly forgetting this film and hoping a sequel doesn’t materialize.
