I’ve always loved this Shakespeare play—it's brimming with pranks, disorder, humor, and even a good dose of desire alongside the central romance. But this version is unfortunately quite ordinary and doesn't live up to the source material. Stanley Tucci's portrayal of "Puck" feels surprisingly subdued, and Kevin Klein’s “Bottom” seems more appropriate for a stage show than this story about an ultimate love triangle. For those unfamiliar with the plot: "Hermia" (Anna Friel) is in love with "Lysander" (Dominic West), but her father (Bernard Hill) insists she marry "Demetrius" (Christian Bale). Eventually, they must appear before the Duke (David Strathairn), who decrees that they either comply with his wishes or face death! Seeking to escape this situation, they all flee into a forest and become entangled in a magical spell cast by "Puck," which creates confusion and leads to some amusing scenes as the Duke deals with his own wedding plans while uncertain about everyone’s true affections. The casting seems to be an issue here; it's almost like the actors are intimidated by the language itself, preventing anything from feeling truly genuine or captivating. It is visually appealing, featuring a lovely score that blends classical music with a Simon Boswell composition, but the comedic elements fall flat and the overall production doesn’t do justice to this fantastical and charming story. There's nothing particularly memorable about it, I'm afraid.
