It's clear where Andrei Tarkovsky’s deliberate pacing comes from. While the ending is telegraphed by the film’s name, the final thirty minutes—the escape sequence—remains intensely suspenseful, as another critic put it. I found this portrayal of Ian Curtis to be better than his work with Joy Division.
