This film’s initial release was in Swedish, and it will be remembered alongside an upcoming American adaptation starring Tom Hanks. Observing how those two versions stack up against each other should be worthwhile. I personally found the movie to be a little better than the novel I read. Maybe that's because I write novels myself. The character in the book just didn’t resonate with me, but I felt much more understanding toward his portrayal on screen. Films naturally have fewer scenes than books, so there were less instances of Ove acting difficult. Also, the actor playing him managed to convey both humor and moments of tenderness with a delicate touch. In the book, I had more empathy for his cheerful and clever wife; I kept wondering why she would stay with someone like him. The book also made me more conscious of how time passed. Movies simply present stories differently, so it’s not as crucial to know how much time elapses between important events. Watching this film, I noticed the setting felt quite enclosed. Most of what happens takes place inside, in people's yards or around the neighborhood, or at the cemetery. There are very few sweeping landscape views, which is unusual for a Scandinavian production. It seems to mirror the restricted nature of Ove’s life, too. Regardless, the script is well-written and, as far as someone watching with subtitles can tell, the acting is superb. As I mentioned earlier, I'm looking forward to seeing what Tom Hanks does with it, but they’ll have a hard time making it better than this one.
