This film explores what happens after a person loses someone they love. It’s a Swedish production based on a book with the same title and was selected to represent Sweden at the 2017 Oscars, having already secured a place on the December shortlist. The story centers around an elderly, curmudgeonly man and his experience following the death of his wife—a difficult period for anyone. While I’ve seen similar movies before, this one felt somewhat different, yet completely believable in everything it addressed. It was funny at times, meaningful, and emotional, especially considering how the story concludes. The narrative unfolds in a small town where a 59-year-old man named Ove spent most of his life, and now contemplates ending his own. His attempt is thwarted by the arrival of a disruptive new neighbor, repeatedly postponing his plans. The film then reveals the reasons behind his despair through flashbacks and present-day events, portraying him as someone who enforces rules strictly within his community. He’s not exactly sociable due to experiences from his childhood and lessons learned from his father about enduring life's hardships. His only real friend was lost too soon. His wife was everything to him, and he also dedicated himself to work on the railway. The film gives adequate attention to his romantic history, with a younger version of Ove, played by another actor, showing how they first met. I don’t recognize any of the actors, but they were all very good. The setting itself is perfect for the story. It seems like the filmmakers made many excellent choices that ultimately paid off with international recognition. > "Honesty is the best thing, Ove. But sometimes honesty needs a little help." It's a heartwarming comedy-drama suitable for all ages—a type of film I’ve been searching for and only realized I needed after watching it. The character of Ove was exceptionally well-developed, and every story element revolved around him effectively. It touches on themes like friendship, love, neighbors, work, moral values, and even pets. There's plenty of humor; it guarantees entertainment if you’re looking for a comedy. Because Ove is presented so seriously, his actions, especially in contrast to the newly arrived woman, lead to a very comedic resolution. The film tenderly portrays Ove's regular visits to his wife's grave, offering insight into life as a widower and retiree, but also how he eventually rediscovers laughter—that was the movie’s strongest point. As I often say, I’m not much of a reader, but I enjoy films based on good books like this one. It is an excellent adaptation, and I hope those who loved the book will appreciate the film as well. Like most quality movies, it runs close to or over two hours due to the gradual development of characters and plot. However, you won’t notice the time passing during this film. The pacing, combined with the likable characters and storyline, makes everything else fade away. The nominations for the 89th American Academy Awards will be announced soon, and I'm confident it will be among them. It appears that three Scandinavian films are poised to make a significant impact at the Oscars this year. In any case, don’t miss it—whether it wins or not, it is one of the best films of the year worldwide. _8/10_
