This British dark comedy, loosely inspired by a novel sharing its title, marked the second collaboration for Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul following 'Need for Speed'. The preview initially sparked my curiosity due to what seemed like a distinctive premise. However, after seeing it, that initial appeal didn’t sustain itself throughout. Typically, films save their most impactful moments for later in the story, but here they appeared quite early on. The opening scene proved to be the film's strongest point; it established an enjoyable tone which then gradually faded as things progressed. While the core idea was promising, the narrative built around it fell short. I anticipated some unexpected developments toward the conclusion, but those never materialized, ultimately leaving me with a fairly standard and uncomplicated entertainment experience. The acting performances were generally solid, though the characters themselves didn't feel fully realized. The writing was responsible for this shortcoming because the four central figures weren’t given enough depth to explore the background mysteries surrounding them. For instance, the film touches on recent hardships experienced by each character, but roughly half of those remained unresolved. Questions lingered about Aaron Paul’s struggles and Imogen Poots' sister, among other things. Despite these issues, there were some enjoyable aspects. Toni Collette and Pierce Brosnan delivered performances that felt purposeful and integrated well with the film's concept. Nevertheless, all four leads gave equally commendable portrayals. Ultimately, a worthwhile subject matter was diminished by an uninspired story. It proved to be somewhat disappointing; it could have been better. I’m unfamiliar with the book, but perhaps a more faithful adaptation would have improved things. It’s an acceptable film to watch, though satisfaction isn't assured as opinions will vary. 6.5/10
