My father, who has passed away, was very fond of this film, and when it initially appeared, I was an overly serious college student who couldn’t grasp his appreciation for it. Now, we live in a time where someone can create a tweet with the president's face superimposed on Rocky Balboa’s body and people are reacting with shock, insisting that they shouldn’t have to interpret anything but the most literal meaning. I find myself observing this situation, quietly saying it was simply intended as humor, and recognizing my former self—the one who disliked *A Knight's Tale*—in those reactions. It makes me realize I was a rather joyless person for roughly four years, and I’m grateful that I eventually moved past that mindset. Initially, I considered the scene where the blacksmith added the Nike swoosh to the armor to be dreadful because I was overly serious... blatant advertising!... exploitation of workers!... unfair labor practices!.... corporate greed! It seemed like so much at the time. But now that period in my life has faded away, it’s just a joke and, honestly, rather charming. The same holds true for Chaucer; once I dismissed him as an insult to literary greatness... but now, older and wiser, I see he was actually the best aspect of the movie. Classic rock music in a film set during the dark ages seemed like cheap appeal at the time… unrealistic… you know, all that criticism. But now that my earlier, less informed perspective has passed, it functions on several levels, and surprisingly they manage to use it effectively to elicit laughter. I suppose what I’m getting at is that having learned to appreciate things and not treat everything with such seriousness or literalness, and understanding a joke when one is made, this film is a genuinely enjoyable and hilarious comedy, and watching it is something to be cherished.
