Jonathan (played by Matt Dillon) seems fixated on taking over Thor Carlsson’s (the impressive Max von Sydow) copper business. The reason for this is suggested to be his childhood, where he would watch trains carrying the Carlsson logo from his home in a less privileged area. Jonathan has managed to win Dorothy Carlsson's (Sean Young) affection, and they were planning a wedding. However, upon discovering she’s pregnant with his baby, he manipulates her onto a rooftop and causes her death. The motivation isn’t entirely clear, though it seems Jonathan worried that Thor would disapprove of her; perhaps he should have considered the consequences before engaging in premarital intimacy. Fortunately for him, Dorothy has an identical twin sister, Ellen (also played by Young). Four years later, a similar situation unfolds; Jonathan easily gains Ellen's affection, but again struggles to control himself. This time, he attempts to win over Thor as well, showering him with agreement and joining him in activities like fishing until the older man offers him a position within the company. Jonathan is so dedicated to this new role that he neglects Ellen, who was ultimately just a stepping stone toward his ambition of becoming a driven young professional. It’s hard to believe there aren't more straightforward paths to achieving that goal than committing murder. The only person questioning the official story about Dorothy’s death is Ellen; she doesn’t accept it was suicide. She points out that Dorothy purchased new shoes shortly before her passing. While a suicidal individual might conceivably buy new shoes, this seems more characteristic of members of the Heaven's Gate cult than anyone else who enjoys music from Paolo Nutini and fashionable footwear.
