Anthony Quinn ("Chavez") is cheerfully engaged in his pirate activities when he encounters a vessel transporting British schoolchildren headed for their education. The atmosphere on board shifts noticeably after that. The captain develops some fondness for the children, even as his crew and his close friend "Zac" (James Coburn) begin to view them with suspicion. This feeling worsens as the kids’ mishaps interfere with the pirates' enjoyment and earnings. Deborah Baxter ("Emily") appears to be the most favored of the youngsters, and when she suffers an injury, it seems their pirating days might be over. While the scenes at sea are reasonably entertaining and the young performers do a decent job, the storyline soon feels overly complicated – in fact, it’s easy to accept the biblical explanation because so many things seem destined to go wrong! I wasn't fond of how the film concluded; it simply didn't feel right. However, it is visually appealing, with considerable care given to the production aspects. It has more of a Mickey Rooney quality than Errol Flynn, but it’s still something you could sit down and watch.
