I'm having trouble seeing this as anyone’s best work, nor does it feel like a respectful nod to its kind, watching two aging gunslingers trying to get by. “Cross” (Johnny Cash) thought he could do alright begging, but all he ended up with was a bad back; “Tenneray” (Kirk Douglas) gets through his days capitalizing on his past while getting free drinks from people who are easily fooled. With these two well-known figures around, the townspeople were hoping for some excitement, but they end up with a couple of guys who come up with a less violent and more showy way to deal with their money problems. They’re going to have a shootout, alright, but it won't be in a dusty street – it will be in an arena, and they’ll be charging admission! As the big day gets closer, the two men discover that they are not only helping each other stay ahead of some visiting gunmen looking for trouble, but also starting to like one another. Surprisingly, they don’t really want to eliminate each other when the time comes – but what now that they've sold out? There's a playful feeling throughout, but it falls flat more often than not, and Cash is as stiff as the Gibson guitar he plays for his theme song. There are many superior “buddy” westerns out there, particularly "War Wagon" (1967), which Douglas made with John Wayne, and that really highlights how dull, cheap-feeling, and comedic this film is, and I found it hard to stay interested. A few familiar faces appear in smaller roles to fill things out a bit, and some of the scenes do show a spark in both their eyes, but not nearly as frequently or consistently enough for me to suggest watching it.
