The magistrate Adrian Lam (played by Dayo Wong) seems to lack enthusiasm for his profession, but finds himself reassigned to active legal work by a new supervisor. It's while dealing with a case following a night of drinking that he ends up defending a woman accused of negligent homicide in connection with her son’s death. A mix of his apathy, inability to perform well, and the effects of alcohol leads to this woman being abandoned when a witness—whose testimony hadn't been formally recorded—alters their account. Consequently, she is sent to prison, plunging Lam into a period of intense distress before he begins to feel remorse and resolves to improve his performance. Along with his former colleague "Evelyn" (Renci Yeung), who was also involved in the initial trial, he attempts to persuade the convicted woman, "Jolene" (Louise Wong), to allow them to pursue an appeal, and the rest of this rather uninspired courtroom story revolves around their attempts. The film begins with some amusing friction between the lawyers, and Dayo Wong is certainly convincing as a jaded and listless attorney. However, once things settle down, the narrative devolves into fairly standard family conflicts and political maneuvering, introducing numerous characters who are as forgettable as the lines they speak. The cinematography has a distinctly television-like quality, and the ending, though fast-paced, is entirely foreseeable. Clocking in at two and a quarter hours, it’s also overly lengthy for the amount of substance present. A tighter edit and fewer tangential storylines might have transformed it into something resembling a “Perry Mason” type series, but as it stands, I found myself feeling rather bored by the conclusion.
