Rob Reiner directed "A Few Good Men," a 1992 military drama centering on a young Navy lawyer (Tom Cruise), who typically avoids trials by settling cases easily. He finds himself representing two Marines at Guantanamo Bay accused of killing another Marine, and they insist they were following orders to carry out a “Code Red” that went wrong. Demi Moore and Kevin Pollak are his colleagues in this case; Kevin Bacon leads the prosecution, and Jack Nicholson portrays the self-important officer in charge at Guantanamo. J.T. Walsh also appears as the Colonel's easily manipulated assistant. The film effectively illustrates the Marines’ code of conduct, notably when Lance Cpl. Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison) refuses to admit guilt to secure a lighter punishment. The characters are thoughtfully developed and portrayed; for example, Kaffee’s (Cruise) love of baseball is evident. The narrative unfolds through dialogue and keeps you engaged without relying on action sequences or excitement. Nicholson delivers an imposing and threatening performance as the arrogant colonel. Kaffee develops his courtroom skills and understands that to defeat him, he must exploit his inflated sense of self-importance. Aside from a somewhat awkward “A Ten Hut” moment at the very end, it's a compelling dramatic experience. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 18 minutes and was filmed in Southern California (Point Mugu, Crystal Cove, etc.) and Washington DC. Aaron Sorkin wrote both the play and the screenplay.
