The beginning feels a bit unsteady, but *A Far Off Place* turns out to be quite good once it finds its footing. It delivers precisely what someone would hope for in an adventure drama; the adventure itself is substantial, and dramatic elements are present throughout. The scenes set in the Kalahari Desert look impressive, filmed as they were across Namibia and Zimbabwe. James Horner’s musical score also feels appropriate. The initial rough patch stems from the performances. Reese Witherspoon, playing Nonnie, and Ethan Embry, portraying Harry, aren't particularly strong during the first 15 to 25 minutes, with Embry being especially weak. Fortunately, as they progress through the film’s 100-minute length, their acting becomes acceptable. Sarel Bok (as Xhabbo) and Maximilian Schell (as Theron) are good in their roles. The antagonists aren't memorable or distinctive, but I don’t think that significantly detracts from the story. The movie effectively illustrates the brutality of ivory poaching, particularly through a scene early on. The ending isn't spectacular, but it feels adequate for what it is. Ultimately, I can say that watching this was an enjoyable experience.
