The movie’s strong connection to Brazilian traditions could present a barrier for some viewers. It draws from a play written by Ariano Suassuna, who dedicated himself to safeguarding those cultural elements. Those bothered by the dreamlike religious sequences should understand that this kind of spiritual practice persisted in Brazil as recently as 2000, alongside the blending of African faiths—specifically candomblé. I really enjoyed the humor reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy; there were plenty of funny moments throughout. The performers’ comedic instincts are excellent, and the filmmaking style clearly echoes the Brazilian soap operas (novelas) from that era, which were immensely popular then, and perhaps remain so.
