I can’t believe it! It’s two and a half hours of pure nonsense. Easily one of the worst films I’ve seen in ages. There are so many problems with this movie, it’s hard to know where to begin. Let me start with what's positive: clearly a great deal of effort went into the visual aspects of the film. The locations and settings are gorgeous. The 'spa' setting is appropriately disturbing and unsettling. The music is also quite good—and that’s about all I can say in its favor. The story itself is just completely botched. It seems like those involved didn't have a clear idea of what they wanted to create: Gothic horror? A strange, dark comedy? A genuinely scary film? Because the final product doesn't manage to be any of those things. The movie jumps from one unbelievable situation to another. New plot points are introduced without connection to anything that came before. On several occasions, it appears to be wrapping up, only to suddenly shift gears with an unexpected and irrelevant twist—and then continue on its bizarre path. It feels like the filmmakers finished the film and then someone had a new idea to add – often something taken from another, better movie – and just stuck it on at the end. The whole thing drags on forever. Cutting out about an hour wouldn’t have hurt and might even have made it somewhat enjoyable. It's also not helped by the fact that you can guess how things will turn out pretty early on, or that some of the plot points aren’t really explained, or that none of the characters are remotely likable or deserving of any sympathy, or that most of the suspense comes from the music rather than the story or performances. Simply put, if you're hoping for a pleasant evening at the movies, don't bother with this one. It just isn’t worth it.
