CinemaSerf on A Christmas Carol

The animation style initially feels somewhat unusual due to its sharp edges, but once you adjust to it, this becomes a rather pleasant take on Charles Dickens' story about the affluent miser "Scrooge." He strongly dislikes Christmas – all that sentimentality – which he dismisses as “humbug!” Fortunately for his afterlife, his deceased business partner "Marley" unexpectedly shows up and alerts him to three visits he’ll receive early on Christmas morning. Scenes from his past, present, and future will unfold before him—all intended to make him recognize his mistakes and improve himself before it's too late. The narrative unfolds in a manner akin to Ronald Neame's 1970 version—except without the musical score—and moves along well, featuring imaginative and evocative animation that brings a Victorian world of poverty, coldness, and generosity to life, even where you least expect it. Robert Zemeckis has gathered a capable group of voice actors to enhance the realistically rendered characters; though they occasionally feel somewhat detached, this remains a valuable reinterpretation of a frequently told story, maintaining a firm grip on the narrative for ninety minutes of dark Christmas fantasy with a message of happiness and optimism.
