Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Ryan O’Neal, Laurence Olivier, Curd Jürgens, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, James Caan, Schell & Liv Ullmann contribute to a faithful depiction of "Operation Market Garden," which involved an Allied effort to drop soldiers behind German lines using every available aircraft. The goal was to capture key river bridges before the Germans could destroy them. The missions faced numerous hazards, including unreliable information, challenging weather conditions, and determined opposition. The film effectively illustrates the immense logistical challenges and inherent risks of this undertaking, setting it apart from more action-oriented war movies. It’s a lengthy production, though; some trimming would have improved its pacing.
