Reno on A Bramble House Christmas

7/10 · Feb 4, 2018

I was just about ready to declare that my Christmas movie watching was done for the year when I stumbled upon this one. This review is coming together quickly, written during the week leading up to Christmas Eve. What drew me in was that it's another Christmas film based on a book with the same title, and I think Hallmark should consider adapting more books—original screenplays often lack creativity and aren’t very engaging. Films adapted from literature, however, tend to make much more sense. They offer artistic presentation, depth of character, and events which make for a convincing story. The plot isn't particularly new; you likely know how it will all play out. But the key is whether you find the storytelling satisfying. The actors and director also contribute significantly, and I believe they did well here. However, there was a noticeable lull in the narrative around the end of the second act. Once everything important had been resolved, the remaining scenes felt drawn-out and unnecessary—just something to pass the time. > -xX] Look around you, and then close your eyes. Put everything you just saw into your brain like a picture. That way, you can keep it, even after we've gone. [Xx- The story follows Willa, a single mother, and her son as they prepare to spend Christmas at the Bramble house BnB. On another track, Finn is dealing with his father’s recent death and disappointment that he inherited nothing except for an encounter with a stranger—Willa. He sets out to discover why and considers legal action. They meet at the Bramble house during Christmas week and unexpectedly form a bond. The unfolding of the truth and how the story concludes are handled effectively. Finn's character initially seems menacing, bordering on villainous. The actor portraying him appeared somewhat detached, even when smiling. However, as the film progressed, his performance improved; I simply became accustomed to it. His behavior gradually shifted, prompting anticipation about his final reaction. Without some element of mystery or complexity, there wouldn’t be a satisfying twist—in this case, it involved his identity and reason for meeting Willa. That character is essential to making the story work. Willa, however, remains enigmatic until she reveals details about her life, especially regarding her son. This has been one of the better Christmas films I've seen this season. More importantly, it evokes emotion—something crucial for movies intended for families. Of course, a romantic element is necessary to make these kinds of stories successful, but it wasn’t the sole focus here. The combination of the festive occasion, romance, and personal lives was handled skillfully. If you're looking for something to watch during Christmas, this would be a decent choice. As I always say though, remember that this is a made-for-television film, so adjust your expectations accordingly and enjoy it. _7/10_
