Picture being on vacation with your attractive boyfriend, only to have your troubled former partner unexpectedly appear with his daughter! I probably would have booked a flight out immediately, but Marianne, a rock star played by Tilda Swinton, chooses to remain with her filmmaker boyfriend, Paul, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts, when Harry arrives accompanied by Penny. At first, the tension seems manageable, but it doesn’t take long for events to escalate into a fairly amusing and complicated sequence of conflicts filled with memories, bitterness, and also quite a bit of desire as alcohol is consumed and secrets begin to surface—whether they are genuine or not! Ralph Fiennes stands out most in this film; he really embodies the character of Harry, who’s flawed and almost detached from reality, and it stays with you. Schoenaerts has enough screen time without clothes on to warrant a spot on the list of attractive actors, and he also offers an outlet for Penny's pent-up emotions, who seems very aware of what she wants. The film runs longer than necessary, and like many movies by Luca Guadagnino, it dwells somewhat excessively on the beautiful Sicilian scenery; sometimes the rhythm feels slow, but when the sharp dialogue is working well, it lets these four rather unpleasant characters showcase a disastrous vacation that seems destined for disaster.
