I don't object to this movement of people; our nations will likely need that workforce to address declining birth rates and the shortage of individuals willing to take on essential jobs that those with higher education tend to avoid. These are people we should welcome, though it’s still important to have rules in place, monitor borders, and ensure reasonable requirements are met for visas or citizenship. The film I'm discussing tells the story of an undocumented Mexican immigrant who crossed the border and made his home in California with his teenage son. He purchased a van to start a landscaping business but finds it stolen by another immigrant who had previously offered assistance. Unable to involve law enforcement without risking exposure, he must recover it on his own. This search for the missing vehicle ultimately facilitates a closer connection between father and son during a crucial period when the young man seemed increasingly drawn to Hispanic gangs and a life of crime. The plot clearly draws inspiration from _Bicycle Thieves_, an Italian film classic, and delivers a good, affecting story with genuine emotion and believable characters deserving of empathy. Demián Bichir and José Julián portray the two central roles in this small but well-made family drama. I wasn't familiar with either actor before, but I believe they both handled their parts effectively; Bichir particularly stood out with a serious, understated, and authentic performance. He was deserving of an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The film’s cinematography, sets, and costumes are unremarkable, lacking any significant or distinctive qualities. The visual and sound effects are well-executed and subtle, designed to keep the focus on the story being told. It's not a technically groundbreaking movie, but it succeeds in engaging viewers fully in its narrative.
