Russell Crowe’s collaboration with Ron Howard proves effective in this biographical film about the celebrated mathematician John Nash. Similar to many individuals possessing exceptional scientific talent, his social abilities were noticeably lacking, and a mix of his appearance and sense of self-importance contributed to a life that swung between periods of great joy and profound sadness. It seems only two people managed to form meaningful bonds with him: his Princeton classmate "Charles" (Paul Bettany) and the remarkably understanding "Alicia" (Jennifer Connelly), whom he encountered while teaching and later married. Simultaneously, Nash’s intellect drew the attention of the U.S. government, which is how he encounters “Parcher” (Ed Harris), who involves him in a scheme to decipher classified Soviet codes. The Soviets become aware of his involvement and subsequently target him with assassins and a network of spies. A combination of his personal anxieties and this increasingly evident danger fuels a paranoia that jeopardizes both himself and those close to him. Howard’s direction is noteworthy for the way he constructs a genuinely threatening character from Christopher Plummer, whose “Rosen” demonstrates considerable skill using needles. Crowe delivers a strong performance; his depiction of this admittedly rather self-centered and unpleasant man comes remarkably close to perfection. While I never found myself particularly fond of the character or feeling much sympathy for his struggles, I did become engaged in seeing how he might overcome the internal battles he faced, uncertain about what was real and what wasn't. The film avoids excessive romantic elements, and both Harris and Connelly contribute positively to a story exploring the complexities of a brilliant but imperfect individual, making it worthwhile viewing.
