It's hard to deny that Andrew Garfield—even without a distinctive hairstyle—is an attractive man who photographs well. Nevertheless, this doesn’t make up for the reality that he’s a rather unremarkable performer, and the movie unfortunately highlights this shortcoming. He portrays "Nash," a father raising his family with his mother (Laura Dern), but finds himself unemployed after losing his construction job. The bank initiates foreclosure proceedings, resulting in the family being forcibly removed from their home by bailiffs, who are then dispersed by police and a particularly greedy and unsympathetic real estate agent, "Rich Carver" (Michael Shannon). Driven to regain his family’s housing, he begins taking on small tasks for this antagonist, and those responsibilities steadily grow until he becomes almost an echo of him—equally callous and indifferent toward more and more people experiencing job loss and misfortune. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, but I struggled with how rapidly the initially resistant Garfield character seemed to accept the situation; this sudden shift undermined any sense of believability. Shannon delivers a solid performance as the villainous profiteer, though Dern’s role feels underdeveloped, and the final resolution is disappointingly conventional.
