My wife doesn't often ask me to watch a film centered around sports, but her curiosity about the four older actresses—though she hadn’t encountered Rita Moreno much before—won out over her general disinterest in athletics. So we decided to see it. The movie proved diverting, though it didn't feel particularly fresh or gripping. The main actors performed acceptably; given their combined decades of experience, what else would you expect? It was odd seeing them with such smooth skin and a youthful appearance, which made it hard to suspend disbelief regarding how characters who weren’t wealthy could all have access to those kinds of cosmetic procedures. Jane Fonda, in particular, has an unnervingly doll-like look; it reminded me of very young girls whose parents apply excessive makeup for beauty pageants that are overtly sexualized. I think I'd suggest waiting until this film is available on a streaming service and watching it with some companions, maybe after having a few drinks to quiet the inner movie critic in everyone. One aspect of the writing that struck me as intriguing was how they altered certain details about the Super Bowl just enough to give the women a minor influence on the final outcome. I suppose, being from New England, I feel obligated to suggest this film to other people from around here.
