It's strange to see John Ford conclude his career with this film. Featuring primarily female characters portrayed by Anne Bancroft and Margaret Leighton, the story centers on individuals isolated in a distant missionary post. Following the departure of an army unit, hostile warriors seize control of their dwelling, forcing them to struggle for survival alongside a cholera epidemic. Frankly, not much happens; Bancroft’s character—a capable and independent physician—feels somewhat incongruous within the setting, particularly when contrasted with Leighton's more reserved, traditional persona and Flora Robson’s underdeveloped role as “Miss Binns.” The resolution also feels rushed.
