The character of “Stride” (Randolph Scott) embodies internal struggle. His past mistakes resulted in his wife working at the Wells Fargo office, where she died during a robbery that saw $20,000 in gold stolen. Now, this former sheriff must contend with personal sorrow and regret while attempting to track down those responsible for the crime. During his pursuit, he crosses paths with aspiring settlers “John” (Walter Reed) and “Annie” (Gail Russell), and joins forces to assist them. They are later joined by the manipulative “Masters” (Lee Marvin)—someone with whom “Stride” shares a history—and his associate “Clete” (Red Barry), who are also searching for the robbers, but concealing their involvement while allowing "Stride" to shoulder most of the burden. Once this foundation is established, some playful moments unfold, frequently instigated by Lee Marvin’s strong performance. He effectively functions as both an instigator and a dangerous threat, serving as a compelling contrast to the charming Russell and Scott's character, who is portrayed with a noticeable stiffness that stands out in comparison to those around him. While not consistently action-packed, there's sufficient activity to maintain engagement and provoke thought as appearances prove deceptive regarding those holding authority. The film demonstrates that brevity can be advantageous, making it an enjoyable watch.
