Stephen Campbell on 7 Days in Entebbe

7/10 · Apr 14, 2019

Despite widespread negative reactions (currently holding a 22% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), _Entebbe_—also known as _7 Days in Entebbe_—isn’t quite as terrible as many critics suggest. The film recounts the 1976 Air France hijacking by Palestinian and German revolutionaries, and Israel's Operation Thunderbolt rescue mission. Written by Gregory Burke and directed by José Padilha, it presents events from numerous perspectives: those of Revolutionary Zellen members Brigitte Kuhlmann (Rosamond Pike) and Wilfried Böse (Daniel Brühl), Israeli Defence Minister Shimon Peres (Eddie Marsan), Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (Lior Ashkenazi), IDF Pvt. Zeev Hirsch (Ben Schnetzer), Air France 1st Engineer Jacques Le Moine (Denis Ménochet), IDF Lt. Col. Yoni Netanyahu (Angel Bonanni), and Ugandan President Idi Amin (Nonso Anozie). The most significant shortcoming is the film's failure to consider every viewpoint, notably omitting the perspective of the Palestinians involved. The only Palestinian character with any development is a fictional individual portrayed by Omar Berdouni, who recounts an experience of Israeli tanks crushing his family’s car. Other notable absences include the death of Dora Bloch (Trudy Weiss), which occurred at Amin's orders after her release, and the exclusion of Wadie Haddad. The film also lacks significant contemporary relevance to the Arab-Israeli conflict beyond a somber acknowledgment of the cyclical nature of violence and the slim chance of peace—a point underscored by an end credit noting Rabin’s assassination by a Jewish extremist in 1995 after he advocated for negotiations. Nevertheless, _Entebbe_ is visually impressive, and the unexpected pairing of Thunderbolt with a Jewish dance sequence proves surprisingly effective. While it doesn't delve deeply into the core issues or avoid appearing to favor an Israeli viewpoint, it remains watchable and deserving of attention.
