6ixtynin9 (Ruang talok 69) is certainly not for everyone; it's a film that requires a specific taste, and I can’t wholeheartedly suggest it. Unless you appreciate violent black comedy crime movies with unusual storytelling, even charming at times. The story centers on Lalita Panyopas, who delivers an outstanding performance as Tum, a woman recently let go from her job through a random drawing. Feeling lost and desperate, she discovers a noodle box containing $25,000 left at her door. Is this luck? Not exactly! When some suspicious gangsters show up, things will never be the same. The film takes inspiration from many others, but in a positive way, especially those often mentioned in reviews. However, it’s far from being derivative; director and writer Pen-Ek Ratanaruang has created a unique Thai neo-noir experience, adding his own distinctive touches—like depicting violent acts indirectly through shadows or blood splatters. The characters are wonderfully odd or completely unhinged. The henchmen come from a Muay Thai boxing club, dressed in loud red outfits (the film uses a lot of strong reds), and one is deaf. Their boss is eccentric, enjoying having someone massage him with their feet. A phone sex operator unexpectedly becomes important to the plot, and one of the villains reveals a sad family history along with a very strange death. It’s all wonderfully peculiar, even as people die; the dark humor constantly pokes at the edges. Ultimately, though, it's a noir story about how unpredictable fate can be and the coincidences that thrust an ordinary woman (who is neither a criminal nor a killer) into a chaotic and violent world—a situation entirely dependent on a number stuck to an apartment door! 8/10
