65 seemed to possess considerable promise, yet ultimately stumbled due to some peculiar narrative limitations. While not the disastrous film that some accounts suggest, it functions as an acceptable science fiction survival thriller, featuring several enjoyable and suspenseful moments. However, a deliberate pacing and certain odd story choices hindered its ability to reach its full potential. Two significant writing decisions proved particularly detrimental: *SPOILERS AHEAD* The decision to eliminate everyone aboard the spacecraft except for the pilot and a young girl significantly lessened the sense of danger and tension. It’s a reasonable assumption that these characters would survive, at least until the film's conclusion, which diminished the impact of the threats they faced. Including more survivors would have provided additional opportunities for them to become victims and would have heightened both the suspense and the movie's tempo. The choice to have the two central figures communicate in different languages also felt problematic. This resulted in stilted and basic conversations that were often irritating and largely unnecessary. A more effective approach might have involved portraying the girl as initially speechless due to shock, gradually increasing her verbal communication as she developed trust with the pilot, which would have better conveyed character development. 65 wasn’t a remarkable or even particularly good movie, but it also didn't prove to be awful. I don't regret seeing it for $5 at the cinema. It had the capacity to be something truly special, but an overly restrictive screenplay and insufficient action on screen kept it from rising above mediocrity.
