It's true what they say about two wrongs not making a right! “Van Morgan” (Dean Morgan) is participating in a five card stud game when one of them gets exposed for cheating and is quickly hanged. That situation should have resolved itself, but then an unusual preacher shows up, and the townspeople begin to die off in a rather unpleasant manner. Is it possible that “Rev. Rudd” (Robert Mitchum) is responsible for this western take on "Ten Little Indians"? All “Van Morgan” can be certain of is that he's not the one committing these crimes, so he needs to act fast if he doesn’t want to become the next victim! It isn't every day you hear Maurice Jarre’s music paired with a western film, but I felt his musical themes complemented this quietly fascinating mystery well. The playful Martin, the more somber Mitchum (though not quite as intimidating as in “The Night of the Hunter” (1955)), and Inger Stevens' charming portrayal of local barbershop owner “Lily” all contribute to keeping things progressing toward an ending where there are numerous hints for viewers to anticipate – provided they observe what’s happening behind the scenes. It took some getting used to seeing Roddy McDowell in a cowboy hat and spurs, but ultimately, Martin’s charm carries the film, and I found it enjoyable.
