Reno on 47 Meters Down

6/10 · Feb 4, 2018

The film plunges viewers into a perilous situation on the ocean floor, highlighting dangers lurking in the deep and frigid waters. It's clearly this year’s version of 'The Shallows.' Another shark attack movie, but set along the coast of Mexico. Two sisters on vacation decide to go cage diving with some locals they met at a bar. The plot moves quickly and directly to the central conflict without unnecessary delays. While underwater, something goes wrong, leaving them stranded 47 meters below the surface with dwindling oxygen. Reaching the top is a long and hazardous journey without the right equipment. The film follows their efforts to escape safely and recounts other exciting occurrences. The director and cast aren't particularly well-known, but it’s nice to see Mandy Moore again. I am unsure about how believable it is, though it functions as an acceptable thriller. There are certainly more impressive films exploring similar themes, but this one provides entertainment, especially for those who don’t frequent the cinema often. It has some tense and exciting scenes, although that intensity doesn't last throughout. The ending had a surprising element; I genuinely didn’t anticipate it. That isn’t to say it was exceptional—it simply worked adequately for what it is. The production quality is good, and it has a relatively short running time. I believe it’s slightly better than its rating suggests, meaning it's not bad as a one-time watch. _6/10_
