Not everyone anticipated this British romance-drama. Without Charlotte Rampling’s performance, which earned her an Academy Award nomination, the film likely would have been overlooked. The pacing is quite deliberate, so while the plot itself isn't remarkable, the acting really carries it, in my opinion. Charlotte Rampling looked wonderful on screen at that point in her life; perhaps her youthful wardrobe had something to do with it. The movie centers around a long-married couple and unfolds leading up to their 45th anniversary. A week before the celebration, the wife uncovers a hidden secret about her husband. As she investigates further, the revelation grows more significant, and how this impacts their current relationship is presented in an engaging way. The story is told from just one viewpoint, so we don’t get much information about the other person's side of things, but it all makes sense. There are some secrets that are best left buried, especially if they aren't causing harm to anyone. Life stretches out when you reach a certain age, and looking back on your past can be revealing. Events from long ago shouldn’t necessarily be judged in light of what happened later. Some incidents from the past seem justifiable depending on how you view them. The strength of this drama is simply in how gracefully it handles this complex situation between a husband and wife. Even if you don't watch many movies, you can probably think of other similar stories, but this one distinguishes itself when compared to those. It wasn’t great, but it was better than many films in its own particular fashion. 7/10
