Robert Aldrich proved to be a consistent filmmaker, but the pairing of Sinatra and Martin seemed to overpower him, resulting in an overly indulgent and chaotic production. A stagecoach carrying $100,000 bound for Galveston, Texas, is ambushed by outlaw Matson (Charles Bronson) and his crew. Among those on board are Zack Thomas (Frank Sinatra), a skilled marksman, and Joe Jarrett (Dean Martin), who appears to be simply along for the ride. The initial moments, where Sinatra wears an absurd smile even while being attacked, really capture the overall feel of this movie. The two men repeatedly attempt to steal the money from each other and engage in a tiresome competition throughout the film. They also become infatuated with Elya (Anita Ekberg) and Maxine (Ursula Andress), as they work towards establishing a casino on the waterfront. Eventually, the pair joins forces to confront Matson and the malevolent banker Burden (Victor Buono). The movie comes across as arrogant and slow-paced. It isn’t humorous in any way; at one point, an aged version of The Three Stooges even makes an appearance. You find yourself hoping Bronson would have eliminated both lead actors during the initial attack.
