It’s a comforting thought that if my time were to come, I’d rather meet my end at the hands of an attractive woman. 4 for Texas comes from director Robert Aldrich, who also collaborated on the script with Teddi Sherman. The cast includes Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Anita Ekberg, Ursula Andress and Charles Bronson; Nelson Riddle composed the music and Ernest Laszlo was in charge of cinematography. The story centers around two competitors, portrayed by Sinatra and Martin, both vying for control of a casino situated near the water. Charles Bronson appears as a pursuing outlaw while Ekberg and Andress provide romantic elements to the narrative. Aldrich himself wasn't fond of this film – he apparently had difficulty working with Sinatra – and its standing is rather unimpressive. The Three Stooges appear in an awkward, unnecessary cameo, so 4 for Texas ends up being fairly unremarkable as a comedy/western. The presence of well-known actors helps keep it entertaining; Deano and Frank are frequently attempting to demonstrate their masculinity, Ekberg & Andress bring considerable beauty to the screen, Bronson is effectively menacing, and Laszlo’s photography is quite nice. However, the script itself is rather dull and trimming at least thirty minutes from its length would have improved it significantly. It's disappointing that Aldrich (the same director behind Ulzana's Raid and Vera Cruz?) didn't get to better showcase his talent for action sequences, particularly given how much the lackluster plot needed some livening up! So, this is one to check off your lists of Aldrich/Rat Pack films; once you’ve seen it, I doubt many outside of dedicated fans of the performers will feel compelled to watch it again. 5/10
