I generally dislike remakes, but I’m usually okay with ones that are Westerns or war movies. My issue with older films is that, before *M*A*S*H*, combat movie soldiers appeared to have just come from a shower and were wearing clean uniforms—not reflecting the actual conditions of fighting. The same thing was true for Westerns; cowboys might be roaming the countryside, but they seemed to always have time for showers, shaving, hair styling, and ironing their clothes. That never felt quite right to me. This remake corrected that problem. It managed to do so while still using the great story by Elmore Leonard, which I think has some of the best ideas ever written for crime or Western narratives.
